The Fellowship of the Groomsmen: Before, During and After the Wedding
The Arrival of the Groomsmen
After the journey, the groomsmen make it to your place, usually two days before your wedding. They expect to be robbed of sleep but plied with food and drink while doing your bidding and to guard you against all the anxieties and stress-inducing pre-wedding jitters. As the groom, rest easy because they can take excellent care of you the same way Frodo guarded the Master Ring.
In the honorary group, members may not always know each other so introduce them to break the ice. The whole idea is initiating the fellowship of the groomsmen to start them off working as a team. A good team is an inspired one and work becomes fun if you do not drive them desperate the way the loathed Nazgul Witch did the famous hobbits.
After meditating on the mysteries of groomsmen gifts and choosing engraved flasks and a Zippo lighter for the nicotine junkie, you don’t want an unhappy bunch on your hands; you have enough trouble as it is and you can’t send them packing for misbehaving.
Before the Wedding
Once the groomsmen are assembled, anticipate some horsing around because this is the lull before the storm; a pun of course, just you know that being a groomsman is no glamour boy stuff.
Roll out the blueprint and give the full details and schedule of the wedding ceremony and wedding party in case these have slipped off their minds. At this point, the best man divides the work - decorating the bridal car, participating in the rehearsals, familiarizing themselves with their roles in the upcoming ceremonies, prepare speeches, and lots more.
If they have not rented their tuxedos beforehand, they are ushered by the groomsman to the shop; there is the barber to visit, and some last minute shopping for items to wax and polish them for the wedding day.
The Wedding Day
When the big day dawns, everybody is up to pamper the groom. The father of the groom or a close male relative provides the avuncular support to ease the nervousness because the groomsmen are also on needles and pins. When everybody is ready, off to church they go. The groomsmen quickly slip into their roles, double as ushers and stand beside the groom when the bride glides down the aisle in a swath of silk and satin.
After the ceremonies, the groomsmen take on other responsibilities; they give directions to the wedding reception venue where they dance with the ladies and make sure everybody is having a good time. They won’t leave the reception area until the festivities are over and the bridal couple safely ensconced in the bridal suite.
The Day After
There are several variations how the day after the wedding is held. The groom may have a private get-together before the honeymoon. This is the best time for the groomsmen to unwind after a whirl of activities and lack of sleep. During this time, feelings, aspirations, and goodwill are shared, keeping the Master Ring of friendship from fading to the black.
