Shawls: Easy Steps On How to Make Your Own Shawl

Shawls:  Nowadays, shawls are popular with girls and older women alike. So, they are perfect gift ideas. While you can buy one to give someone, you can make your gift more special by making it yourself. Even beginners can do this project because it is so easy that it doesn’t even require a pattern and can be done under thirty minutes.  Below are a couple of simple methods to sew a triangular shawl, which is perfect to drape over the shoulders for warmth and add a touch of style to your clothes.

First, you will need either a 54-inch square fabric measuring 1 and ½ yards or a 60-inch square fabric measuring 1 and 2/3 yards.  For the trimming, buy a beaded trim. The trim should measure 3 yards if you are using a 54-inch fabric or 3 and 1/3 yards for a 60-inch fabric.  The first method requires that you square the fabric’s ends and then trim the fabric with the beaded fringe. Sew the fringe the length of two sides of the fabric about half an inch from the border on the right side. Ensure that the ends of the trim are positioned towards the inside of the fabric.

To create this outfit add-on, fold the fabric to make a triangle out of it with the right sides facing together.  Pin and sew along the stitching of the fringe where it is attached to the fabric. Leave about 3 to 4 inches of opening along one side.  Turn the fabric out through the opening and press carefully. Do a blind hem or slip stitch along the opening to close it. Now, you have a shawl that’s ready to wear.  If you prefer a triangular one with topstitching but without any fringes, here’s another method: Take the square fabric and fold it into a triangular shape, making sure the right sides are together.
Then, sew both sides to create a half-inch seam. Leave about 3 inches of opening along one side and turn the right side of the fabric out through it. After pressing the fabric well, close the opening with a slip stitch. Then, topstitch about 3/8 of an inch from the edges’ seams.

The Best Fabric: While you can turn almost any type of fabric into a shawl, the most suitable ones are fabrics that drape or fall nicely such as silk, satin, lace and chiffon. Chiffon and silk are great materials to make a formal shawl because of their rich, smooth appearance.  Pieces made of these fabrics look elegant and matches a formal evening dress perfectly. They can also be used to make ones for daytime wear. You can use any light fabric as material for a daytime wear.

If this accessory will be used along with a satin dress or top, make a matching satin shawl or alternatively, a lovely lace piece. You can use fabrics with designs or even embroidery in it if you want to make it more interesting. Just make sure the design works well with the suit or dress.  Remember, accessories should enhance not conflict with the main outfit. Consider making more than one shawl in different materials so the choices are plenty whatever the occasion is. It’s also a good idea to create these simple pieces and give them to an orphanage or a nursing home. Whatever you end up doing with the shawl, the time and effort you poured into it will make it extra special.
